Sanctum Homeless Housing

Los Angeles is home to over 34,000 individuals experiencing homelessness, with more than 25,000 currently without shelter. This staggering figure surpasses the total number of new units constructed in downtown LA over the past two decades. It was truly a privilege to contribute to this endeavor. Participating in a real-world initiative taught me invaluable lessons in managing socially impactful projects through innovative design thinking, surpassing the scope of traditional education. As a guiding principle of universal design, crafting solutions for those at the base of the human pyramid inherently leads to designs that are more inclusive and beneficial for all. Our pop-up hut employs color and transparency as therapeutic elements, instilling a sense of security and compassion among our users. Through this project, our aim is to help individuals reclaim a sense of belonging and nurture a deeper connection to their community. Designed as a temporary housing solution, the emphasis is also placed on creating a flat-pack structure for enhanced mobility and ease of deployment.
