Proteus™ Underwater Research Station • The Next Frontier in Oceanic Exploration
Proteus™ stands as an innovative underwater research station poised to revolutionize scientific and oceanic exploration. By providing a habitable environment for scientists to work over extended durations, it facilitates diverse research missions. The Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center (FCOLC) enlisted Fuseproject to conceptualize an underwater counterpart to the International Space Station. This platform aims to foster global collaboration among top researchers, academics, government bodies, and corporations, driving scientific progress and promoting a sustainable future for our planet.

Covering an expansive 4,000 square feet, PROTEUS™ surpasses previous submarine habitats by three to fourfold, offering accommodation for up to twelve occupants simultaneously.
Anchored to the ocean floor with adaptable legs inspired by the spiral concept, this structure features a network of modular pods catering to various needs. The primary pod includes a moon pool for submersible docking, with the flexibility for attachment or detachment to suit evolving user requirements.
Extended stays underwater pose challenges such as social isolation and limited natural light. To address this, central spaces prioritize comfort, social interaction, and professional collaboration. Ample windows strategically positioned on the top and sides maximize natural light intake.
Interconnected levels boast a spiral ramp, promoting physical activity and mobility among residents. Unlike conventional facilities prioritizing utility over comfort, PROTEUS™ fosters an inviting, homely ambiance in its main spaces. Moreover, it pioneers the first underwater greenhouse, enabling residents to cultivate fresh produce, overcoming restrictions on open-flame cooking.
